A colonel of the Carabinieri, Giancarlo Gutierrez was an Italian rider who competed at the 1956 Stockholm Equestrian Olympics in eventing. He was a versatile rider who obtained numerous victories and placings in many international horse competitions, not only as an eventer but also in show jumping. Gutierrez took part in 268 national competitions, winning 233 events.
In the late 1980s and early 90s, Gutierrez became a general and designed a section of the Carabinieri Sports Center to encourage young people to start riding, and in 1993 the Horse Riding section was officially established. Giancarlo’s father, Antonio, was also a top rider, who set the world high jump record aboard Osoppo, with 2.44 metres on 21 October 1938 in Roma.
