The son of a wealthy Lancashire cotton mill owner, Reg Hindley, like his father, had a love of horses, and over the years was involved in many different aspects of equestrianism. He started off as a steeplechase jockey in the 1930s and was also involved in hunting and was Master of the Pendle Forest and Craven Hunt. In 1949 he founded the Ribblesdale Stud, which went on to produce some top-class racehorses, some of which were trained by his son Jeremy, one of Britain’s leading race horse trainers, and a co-owner of the Ribblesdale Stud.
Reg Hindley was also a respected equestrian judge and Great Britain eventing team selector. He regularly opened up his Ascot home, Ribblesdale Park, for use by British three-day event teams before major competitions, and at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics he was captain of the GB equestrian team. Hindley died at his son’s Newmarket home at the age of 58 in 1972 after suffering a heart attack.
