Moldovan boxer Vasile Belous competed in the welterweight class at the 2012 London Olympics, winning his opening bout against Selemani Kidunda, before losing to Taras Shelestiuk. Belous then set his sights on boxing at the 2016 Rio Olympics but ultimately did not qualify for the Games. Despite this, however, he was named as the best boxer in Moldova in 2016 and 2017, with him winning a bronze medal at the 2017 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Ukraine. Tragically Belous was killed in a car accident in Moldova in August 2021. He was 33.
