Charles Lewenhaupt was the son of colonel Sixten Lewenhaupt and his wife, a baroness. He graduated from school in 1901 and embarked on a military career as an officer volunteer at 2nd Svea Artillery Regiment. In 1902-03 he attended the military school and joined the 1st Svea Artillery Regiment in the following year as a second lieutenant. Lewenhaupt was promoted to lieutenant in 1906. He served as equestrian instructor for the general staff (1914-15) and assistant instructor at the war school (1915-17). In 1915, he was promoted to cavalry captain and discharged from active service two years later but remained in the reserve of his regiment until 1931.
Charles Lewenhaupt took a shared ninth place together with his brother Gustaf in the individual show jumping event at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Unlike his brother, who won gold in the team event, Charles was not a member of the Swedish team. Lewenhaupt started a business career in 1917, initially as managing director of an insurance company and, beginning in 1920, as managing director of the Swedish Explosives Association. In this position, he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Sword. He married Countess Louise Hamilton in 1910. They had three sons and one daughter.
