Alec Scott was commissioned into the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards from the Royal Military College, Sandhurst in 1926. He went on to reach the rank of colonel and was honoured with the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and Military Cross. As a horseman, he was a member of the Great Britain eventing team that won a bronze medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Scott was originally selected for the 1948 Olympic eventing team, but on the day after his selection he broke a bone in his right arm while schooling a horse, and had to withdraw from the Games. Scott’s son Jonathan was also an excellent horseman, and his brother-in-law Duggie Stewart won a team show jumping gold medal at the 1952 Stockholm Olympics.
