Show jumper Sönke Sönksen won a team silver at the 1976 Montréal Olympics. His greatest moments came in 1975, winning a team gold at the Europeans, and in 1978 winning the West German championship. In 1975, he also won the individual bronze medal at the Europeans, and a silver medal at the West German nationals. His parents were farmers, but Sönksen himself later worked as a riding coach and horse breaker. He was on the German national coaching staff.
