Alessandra Cappellotto was the first Italian female cyclist to win the World Road Race title, which she did in 1997 in San Sebastian. She had previously won World bronzes in the 1993 team time trial and in the 1996 individual time trial. Domestically Cappellotto won the Italian time trial title in 2001 and the road race in 2003. She ended her career at 36-years-old with a total of 42 wins.
