Ian Lariba played table tennis for the Philippines at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but had little chance to advance her career past that. She had been a student at De La Salle University, going undefeated during her time there, and being voted most valuable player three times. In 2017 Lariba developed leukemia and lived only one more year, dying at age 23.
