In the 1980s Martin N’Dongo Ebanga boxed for his native Cameroon in both the lightweight and light-welterweight divisions. N’Dongo was one of six boxers selected to represent his country at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Despite not being considered as one of the best medal chances for Cameroon, he was the only boxer to win one: bronze in the lightweight tournament. At the Los Angeles Games he had victories over Shadrach Odhiambo, Gordon Carew, and Fahri Sümer, before losing to Luis Ortiz in the semi-finals. He won another bronze at an international tournament when he competed at the 1987 African Games in Nairobi, Kenya. The following year N’Dongo returned to the Olympics to compete in the light-welterweight tournament at the 1988 Seoul Games. After beating Hubert Wester he then lost his next bout to David Kamau and was eliminated from the competition. N’Dongo won ten national titles before embarking on a short and unsuccessful professional career in Europe in 1997, with him retiring after just three fights.
