Described as one of the greats of Bulgarian cycling, Georgi Abadzhiev started his career from an early age, becoming a pioneer of the sport in Razgrad. Abadzhiev was selected to compete at the 1924 Paris Olympics, but despite the high expectations, he finished almost two hours behind the race winner, down in 53rd place. A few months after the Olympics he had better success back home when he became the winner of the first edition of the Tour of Bulgaria, with him also winning the fifth stage of the race. Abadzhiev continued to compete in races in his home country, becoming a multiple-time Bulgarian champion in endurance and road cycling.
