Biography

As a track cycling specialist Carlos Miguel Álvarez was a six-time Argentine champion, competed at three Olympic Games, and won multiple medals at the Pan American Games. Álvarez initially had success on the road, winning the Doble Bragado stage race in both 1964 and 1965, before becoming the Argentine road champion in 1966. In 1964 he made his first appearance at the Olympics, where he finished fifth with his compatriots in the team pursuit at the Tokyo Games. Two years later he won his first of six national pursuit titles on the track, with him going on to win five more titles from 1970 to 1975.

In 1967 Álvarez won three golds at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg with victory in the 4,000 metres team pursuit, the 10 km scratch race, and the team time trial on the road. One year later he won silver in the amateur team pursuit event at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Roma to earn himself another place on the Olympic team. At the Mexico City Games he competed in both the team time trial and the team pursuit.

Álvarez then won further medals at the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali with silver in both the 4,000 metres individual and team pursuit events, and bronze in the road team time trial. This was followed by his third and final appearance at the Olympics, riding in the individual and team pursuit at the München Games, tying for fifth in the former. At the end of his career Álvarez won one more medal at the Pan American Games, this time a bronze in 1979 in the team pursuit.
