In 1958 cyclist Ignacio Astigarraga finished third in the Spanish national road race for amateurs. Two years later Astigarraga won the overall classification in the Vuelta a Bidasoa amateur race to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. He then finished 56th in the individual road race at the Roma Games, along with eighth in the 100 kilometres team time trial. One month later, still competing as an amateur, Astigarraga rode against professional riders in the Vuelta a La Rioja stage race, finishing 30th overall.
