In 1961 Baensch won a bronze medal in the sprint at the World Championships, and he turned pro at the end of the year. As a pro sprinter, he won three straight medals in the sprint at the Worlds, with silvers in 1964 and 1966, and a bronze in 1966.
Baensch rode six-day races in Europe to make money. He later became a truck driver in Sweden, before returning to Australia in 1974, where he worked on a Newcastle oil rig, and settled in the area. In 2011, Baensch was inducted into the Victorian Cycling Hall of Fame.
