Biography

In 1957 Danish amateur cyclist Vagn Bangsborg won the Star Race in Roskilde and finished second at the Sjælland Rundt one-day race. For the next four consecutive years Bangsborg competed at the Peace Race, finishing fourth in 1960 and fifth in 1961. In 1960 he also rode in the ill-fated 100 kilometres team time trial at the Roma Olympics. The race was made infamous following the death of compatriot Knud Enemark Jensen, who died after collapsing off his bike mid-race due to heatstroke, suffering a fatal brain injury.

In 1961 Bangsborg rode in the Tour de l’Avenir in France, finishing third on stage seven before abandoning the race. One year later he enjoyed success at the UCI Road World Championships when the Danish team won silver in the team time trial. Bangsborg then rode in the Milk Race in Britain in 1963, finishing second on the opening stage, before winning the team time trial at the 1964 Nordic Championships.
