German track cyclist Robert Bartko had his greatest year in 2000, winning two gold medals at the Sydney Olympics in the individual and team pursuit, setting a world record as the first team ever under 4 minutes (3:59.710 in the final). Four years earlier at Atlanta the team disappointed with a ninth place. At Athens in 2004, he came in fourth in the team pursuit and the Madison and was also eighth in the individual pursuit. At the World Championships, Bartko earned four gold medals, two silvers, and two bronzes. He also won a gold medal at the 2009 Europeans and 21 six-day races. Occasionally, he participated in several road races and road tours.
Bartko later became a cycling coach and was sports director of the German speed skating national team from 2014-18. Finally, he took over the job as a sports consulting and association promoter at the NOC of Germany.
