Biography

Whilst still in his late teens, Danish cyclist Niels Baunsøe won both the junior road race and the junior team trial at the 1957 Nordic Championships. That same year Baunsøe also finished second in the amateur road race at the Danish championships. One year later he came third in the junior road race at the Nordic Championships before placing third in the elite race at the 1959 Championships. His biggest win of his career came the same year, winning the Rund um den Sachsenring one-day race in East Germany.

In 1960 Baunsøe finished third in the track pursuit at the Danish championships. Later that year he also rode in the ill-fated 100 kilometres team time trial at the Roma Olympics. The race was made infamous following the death of compatriot Knud Enemark Jensen, who died after collapsing off his bike mid-race due to heatstroke, suffering a fatal brain injury. Baunsøe briefly rode as a professional but soon returned to the amateur ranks after becoming disillusioned by the sport. He competed in several six-day races in both Denmark and Germany, and won a stage of the 1964 Tour of Yugoslavia before retiring one year later.
