Walter Becker was the 1952 German Road Race Champion. This qualified him for the Helsinki Olympics that same year, where he finished fifth with the German team in the road race although he did not finish individually. The best three cyclists were rated for the final result. Becker was in the leading group when he had a fall caused by a spectator, which forced him to withdraw. The following year he was second at the German championship and in 1955 also finished second in the German Cross Country Championships. His brother August also was a successful cyclist.
