Dieter Berkmann

Dieter Bergmann was a West German track cyclist who participated in the sprint at the 1972 München and 1976 Montréal Summer Olympics. He was eliminated in the second round repêchage in München and finished an unfortunate fourth in Montréal, losing the third place match against East German cyclist Hans-Jürgen Geschke. From 1972-74 and in 1976 Bermann won the West German national sprint title, and in 1975 also won a tandem title.

After Montréal, Berkmann turned professional and won sprint silver medals in 1978 and 1979 at the World Professional championships. He also took part in 19 six-day races. Between 1982-84 he coached the West German track cycle team and then studied medicine, becoming an orthopedic surgeon and with his own practice. He was also the track doctor at the Six Days of Munich Six race from 1996-2009. In 2009 he lost in the election for the post of president of the German Cycling Union.
