Biography

In 1964 Australian cyclist Ray Bilney won his first of three consecutive national road race titles, earning himself a place on the Olympic team. Bilney just missed out on a medal at the Tokyo Games when he came fourth in a bunch sprint, being narrowly beaten by Walter Godefroot (BEL), who took third. One year later he won the overall classification at the Tour of Tasmania before representing Australia at the 1966 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Jamacia. Four years later he won silver in the road race at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland, finishing second to Bruce Biddle of New Zealand. Bilney won multiple honours during his career, including twice being named the Ballarat Sportsman of the Year, and being inducted into the Victorian Cycling Hall of Fame in 2014.
