Jack Bishop made his public début representing the Thames Ironworks club in 1893. He specialized in mile races, handicap and scratch, and also competed on the tandem with his brother G. W. Bishop. The brothers set new British unpaced flying start tandem records for three-quarters of a mile and one mile at Canning Town in 1898. They did, however, fail in their attempt to set the standing start records. After more than 10 years at the Thames Ironworks club, Bishop moved to Beaumont CC, and with it, made a move up to longer distances. At the 1908 London Olympics he competed in the 100 km race, but without success. In 1909, when he was regarded as something of a veteran after a 16-year career, he entered, and won, his first 24-hour race, at Herne Hill. He had never previously raced as much as 12 hours.
