Although he took part in the tandem event in Melbourne, Brotherton’s greatest international successes came as a pursuiter. He won World Championship silver medals in the amateur individual pursuit in both 1954 and 1955 and a silver in the individual pursuit at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He also finished fourth in the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games track time trail and competed in the Sprint 1000 metres. In the British Empire and Commonwealth Games he competed for England. Shortly after the Olympics, Brotherton settled in Australia where he teamed up with Sid Patterson to win the 1958 Six Days of Sydney race.
