In 1936 Edgar Buchwalder was selected to represent Switzerland in road cycling at the Berlin Olympics. In a tight race Buchwalder finished 11th overall, just two seconds behind the winning time. With compatriots Ernst Nievergelt and Kurt Ott placing third and 14th, respectively, the results contributed to the overall placings in the team event, with Switzerland winning silver. Less than a month later Buchwalder won the amateur road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Bern. He continued to have success back home, winning the Swiss national road race championship in 1940 and 1942. Buchwalder also won multiple stages of the Tour de Suisse, and won the 1942 edition of the Tour de Berne.
