Biography

A track pursuit cyclist for Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, Cliff Burvill never really stopped testing himself and competing. He raced on the roads later in his career but then turned to the surf, joining the Byron Bay Surf Club, where he began racing marathon canoe events. In 1988 he won silver medals in the Australian Marathon Canoe Championships in K2 and K4, over 42 and 20 km. He continued to be prominent in marathon canoe events through the 1990s.

Burvill continued to train on a bike and it was at the newly opened criterium circuit at Byron Bay where he lost his life in January 2021 after an accident on the road.
