Franco Cacioni was born in Roma, Italy in 1933 before he moved to Venezuela, where he represented the country in cycling races. In 1956 Cacioni was selected to compete on both the road and track and the Melbourne Olympics, riding in the individual road race and the 4,000 metres team pursuit. Three years later he had the best results of his career, winning two medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Caracas. On the track Cacioni was part of the Venezuelan quartet that won gold in the 4,000 metres team pursuit, as well as bronze in the individual pursuit. Franco’s father Amerigo was also a cyclist, riding in three editions of the Giro d’Italia in the early 1930s.
