Robert Charpentier was the winner of the individual road race at the 1936 Games when he also won gold medals in the team road race event and the 4,000 metre team pursuit. Charpentier got started in cycling when he was an apprentice to a butcher and made his deliveries on his bicycle. He was runner-up at the 1935 amateur world championship road race. World War II prevented him from having any success after the 1936 Olympics as a professional.
