Following a cycling career in Malaysia in the early 1960s Choy Mow Thim moved to Canada where he helped the poorest in the community. Choy was part of the Malaysian national cycling team that competed at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. At the Games he finished 32nd in the individual road race in addition to taking to the track with his compatriots in the 4,000 metres team pursuit. In 1969 he left Malaysia to move to Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. There he became a hardworking figure in the Chinese community, helping the old, poor, and sick, including running a soup kitchen. Choy also worked as an auctioneer, buying thousands of pairs of shoes from bankrupt stock that he later sold to the people in the area. For recognition of his hard work and support since he moved to Canada, Chow was honoured with the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal in 2012.
