Biography

Born in France in 1937 to a family of Polish immigrants, Jan Chtiej returned to Poland as a child and took up track and road cycling. Chtiej was a two-time Polish champion, first winning the 4 km team title in 1958, followed by the team road title in 1963. After a couple of podium finishes on stages of the Tour of Poland he was selected to compete at the 1960 Roma Olympics, where he came 54th in the individual road race. Chtiej’s best results came three years later when he won stages six and eight of the Tour of Poland. From 1964 to 1968 he rode professionally before relocating to Belgium in 1965, adopting the name Jean-Pierre Chtiej.
