Johanna Bassani began competing in winter sports from a young age, winning a ski championship in her hometown in Austria when she was 12-years-old. Four years later Bassani took up ski jumping, making her international début in the discipline at the OPA Nordic Ski Games in Planica, Slovenia in 2018, winning bronze in the team event. Now a regular on the Nordic ski competition circuit, she competed at the 2019 OPA Nordic Ski Games in Kandersteg, Switzerland where she once again won bronze in the team event.
Towards the end of 2019 Bassani won silver at the national Nordic combined championships in Austria to earn a place on the Youth Olympic team for the Games in Lausanne, Switzerland in January 2020. She finished eighth in the individual Nordic combined for girls, and won silver in the mixed youth team event. With her success at the Youth Olympics she was named in the Austrian national team for the 2020 Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Oberwiesenthal, Germany. Tragically, however, Bassani was found dead in May 2020 only a few days after her 18th birthday. She had left a note saying she was under immense pressure to perform in competitions.
