A multiple winner of national titles on both road and track, Coomarawel was the first and, as of 2008, only cyclist to represent Sri Lanka at the Olympic Games. He was the winner of the inaugural Tour de Ceylon in 1960, a triumph he repeated on four other occasions. He worked for the Central Transport Board and later served in the Sri Lankan Air Force before emigrating to Australia.
