Biography

Cumbrian cyclist Mike Cowley won two stages in the 1964 Tour of Britain Milk Race when he was classified fourth overall and third in the mountains category. He went to that year´s Tokyo Olympics and competed in the team time trial and individual road race, where he finished 51st out of 132 starters. Cowley won two more stages in the Milk Race in 1966 but only finished seventh overall. Also that year, he came second to Arthur Metcalfe in the National Amateur Road Race Championship at Market Harborough, Leicestershire, with both men being credited with the same time.

Cowley was scheduled to sign professional terms with the Mackeson-Whitbread team in 1967 but stalled on that decision due to business commitments, and they signed Hugh Porter instead. Cowley did turn professional with Carlton Cycles in 1968 and in a four-year professional career he also rode with the Holdsworth-Campagnolo team. Cowley reverted to being an amateur and continued racing competitively until 1976.
