Juan de Dios had a nice career racing in his native Colombia. His biggest career victory came in 1973 when he won the Clasico Radio Cadena Nacional (RCN). He also placed second at the Clasico RCN in 1972, fourth in 1974, and fifth in 1971. De Dios twice rode the Tour of Colombia, placing fourth in 1973 and fifth in 1972. After several years out of the amateur peleton, he returned in 1980 to place fourth at the Tour du Táchira.
