Biography

In 1966, when he was only 18-years-old, New Zealand cyclist John Dean won the overall award at the Taranaki Sports Awards. One year later Dean won both the road and track cyclist of the year awards, in addition to winning the road race at the national cycling championships. In 1968 he competed in both the road and team time trial at the Mexico City Olympics, finishing 23rd in the latter. Dean returned the Olympics four years later for the München Games, this time riding in the team pursuit on the track. He continued to represent the national cycling team for a few more years, including competing in the track time trial at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch.
