Biography

Cyclist René Deceja was a veteran at the Vuelta del Uruguay, riding a dozen editions of the race from 1953 to 1969. In addition to multiple stage wins, Deceja’s best results came in 1958 and 1967 when he won the overall general classification. His performances at home earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1956 Games in Melbourne, where he placed 33rd in the individual road race. Three years later he had his best results at an international competition, winning bronze in both the road race and the combined team event at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago. In 1968 Deceja returned to the Olympics as part of the quartet that rode in the 100 kilometres team time trial.
