Biography

Dani Alves was a Brazilian right back, considered one of the greatest ever fullbacks, who has won more senior titles than any footballer ever, with 43.

Born Daniel Alves da Silva, he played for the Brazil national team from 2006-22, earning 126 international caps. At the club level he played for Bahia (2001-03), Sevilla (2003-08), Barcelona (2008-16 and 2021-22), Juventus (2016-17), Paris Saint-Germain (2017-19), São Paulo (2019-21), and UNAM in 2022-23.

With Barcelona he won La Liga in 2009-11, 2013, and 2015-16; the Copa del Rey in 2009, 2012, and 2015-16; the UEFA Champions League in 2009, 2011, and 2015; the UEFA Super Cup in 2009, 2011, and 2015, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2009, 2011, and 2015. He also won the UEFA Cup in 2006 and 2007 with Sevilla and the UEFA Super Cup in 2006. With the national team, he helped Brazil win the Copa America in 2007 and 2019 and the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009 and 2013.

Dani Alves’ life outside of the pitch has been more troubled. He was accused of tax fraud in Spain but was acquitted of those charges in November 2023.

In January 2023 Alves was arrested in Catalan on charges of sexual assault, which allegedly took place at a Barcelona nightclub on 30 December 2022. The case went to trial and on 22 February 2024, Alves was found guilty of rape, and was sentenced to 4½ years in prison and ordered to pay €150,000 (~$163,000 [US]) in damages to the victim.
