Geremew Denboba

Geremew Denboba was an Ethiopian cyclist who competed at two Olympic Games. He was Ethiopia’s most successful Olympic cyclist of all-time winning 26 trophies and 32 medals in all the races he competed in.

Geremew was part of Ethiopia’s delegation at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the first time that the nation had competed at the Games. He finished in 25th place in the road race and ninth overall in the team race. Four years later Geremew competed at the 1960 Roma Olympics. He was part of the Ethiopian team that finished the 100 kilometres team time trial, ahead of only Malta and South Korea. Four days later he competed in the road race, but did not finish after breaking his shoulder and leg in a crash.

Geremew then became a national cycling coach, travelling with the team to the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and the 1973 All-Africa Games in Nigeria.
