Between 1974 and 1986 Ervin Dér was a cyclist in the BVSC team. He was primarily a track competitor, but he also won the junior championship title on the road. As a track competitor he won the Hungarian championship in 1976 in the 4,000-meter team pursuit and in the tandem in 1985. Between 1977 and 1980 he was a member of the Hungarian track team. He made it to the Moskva Olympics where he finished 12th on the track in the 4,000-meter team pursuit. He continued to compete after the Olympics until his retirement in 1986.
In 1993 Dér obtained a diploma in sports organization at the College of Physical Education and wrote his thesis entitled “Individual responsibility in sports management”. Later Dér carried out home renovations and dealt with real estate. Even as a pensioner he continued to ride and regularly cycled 50-60 kilometers a day.
