When badminton was first held at the Olympic Games at Barcelona in 1992, Germany nominated four players to participate. Stefan Frey partnered Stephan Kuhl in the men’s doubles and the pair were eliminated in their first-round match. That same year, both surprisingly won the bronze medal at the European Championships. The pair also won the Swiss Open in 1990.
Frey won ten German Championships, all in the men’s or mixed doubles. In 1983, he won the French Open with the non-Olympian Mechthild Hagemann, and in 1985, the USSR Open with another non-Olympian, Thomas Künstler.
