Gianni Giacomini was the 1979 World Amateur Road Champion, and was considered one of the favorites at the 1980 Olympic road race. But he was dropped by Soviet Sergey Sukhoruchenkov, who dominated the race, and Giacomini placed fifth. He received in 2020 the Gold Collar for Sporting Merit from the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI).
