Raúl Gómez retired from cycling in 1981, with a record number of race wins by an Argentinian. However, he returned in 1983 to compete in the return of the Six Days of Buenos Aires race at the Luna Park after an absence of 18 years.
After leaving cycling, Gómez remained closely involved in the sport, first as a coach, where he led an Argentine Under-20 team, and then as a bicycle spare parts dealer. In May 2010, after a long illness, he passed away.
