José Gómez turned professional after the 1968 Olympic Games, and competed in the professional peloton for seven years, retiring after 1975. As a pro, he first came to attention when he finished second and third on two stages in the 1965 Tour of Britain. He won stage two at the 1966 Tour de l’Avenir, and placed second in the 1970 Midi Libre. His biggest victory was the 1970 Tour de Andalusia, but he also won stages at the 1971 Vuelta a Mallorca, the 1972 Klasika Spring, and the 1972 Tour of Aragon. He rode the Tour de France in 1971 and 1973 but failed to finish both years. At the Vuelta a España, Gómez placed 24th in 1971 and 29th in 1970, failing to finish the Vuelta in 1972 and 1975. During his career, he rode for Kas-Kaskol (1969), Werner (1970-72), La Peña Bahamontes-Homemade (1973), La Homemade (1974) and Super Ser-Zeus in 1975.
