Cyclist Bernd Gröne was a member of the West German 100 km time trial team at the 1984 Los Angeles that finished a disappointing 12th. Four years later at Seoul, the team placed much better at sixth. In the individual road race, Gröne lost the sprint against his East German opponent Olaf Ludwig by 3 seconds, but won the silver medal. In 1987, he won the Grand Prix of Weinstraße and the “Gran Premio della Liberazione”.
In 1988 Gröne won the national amateur road race title and in 1993 won the professional title, having turned professional in 1989. He rode firstly with Team Stuttgart, and then Team Telekom. By profession, Gröne trained as a gas and water plumber, but later took over his parent’s bicycle shop.
