Biography

Imre Győrffy started cycling in 1926 in the colors of Nyomdász TE, mainly in road races. In 1929, he moved to FTC and switched to track racing. He won the Hungarian championship in 1929, 1930, and 1932 in sprint, and in 1932 and 1933 in tandem. After that, it came as a surprise that in 1932 he wanted to take part in the Los Angeles Olympics in the road race. He was so determined to compete that he wanted to ride from Budapest to Hamburg and by taking a job on a boat across the ocean, he would have saved more from the cost of travel. Unfortunately, this adventure could not be realized.

In 1933, Győrffy finished third in the 100 km national championship. In 1936, he competed at the Berlin Olympics as a track racer in the sprint competition.

During his career, Győrffy often clashed with the leadership of the Hungarian Cycling Association, so he was banned several times. In 1930, he was banned for a year for spreading malicious news. In 1935, during the Tour de Hongrie race, he threw his bottle at the presidential car and smashed its window. For this, Győrffy was at first banned permanently, a penalty that was reduced to two years in light of his results from the past. In 1936, he was banned forever for his actions against one of his competitors. He wanted to return in 1939 and appealed, but the association did not rescind his suspension, so he retired. After completing his sports career, Győrffy continued to work as a federal coach and had his own bicycle repair shop.
