Competitive cyclist Tom Harrison specialised on the track, where he became a two-time Australian sprint champion. In 1962 Harrison won gold in the 1,000 metres match sprint at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth. Two years later he was one of the favourites to win gold in the same event at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. After winning his heat, however, he failed to qualify from the second round after losing in both the heats and the repêchage to be eliminated.
