Road cyclist Hans-Joachim Hartnick participated in the 100 km team time trial at both the 1976 and 1980 Olympics. In 1976 the East German team finished in a disappointing 10th place, but at Moskva the team won the silver medal, only 0.70 seconds ahead Czechoslovakia. In 1974 and 1975, Hartnick won the Tour of the GDR, in 1976 he took the Peace Race (Friedensfahrt), and in 1979 won a gold medal at the World Championships in the 100 km team time trial. Domestically, he won the 1976 and 1978 road race, and in 1980 the cyclo-cross title.
Hartnick later became a cycling coach. After German re-unification he was named chief coach of the German female track cyclists. From 2006-07 he was then Chinese chief coach. After returning to Germany he worked as a sports teacher.
