Czechoslovak cyclist Petr Hladík started competing in the youth category when he was 14-years-old. A few years later Hladík won the junior edition of the Peace Race in 1966, followed by the Prague–Karlovy Vary–Prague amateur race one year later. In 1968 he won a stage of the Tour of Slovakia and was selected to ride in the road race at the Mexico City Olympics, but did not finish due to a puncture. After the Games he became the Czechoslovak amateur road race champion, in addition to competing in the road race at the World Championships.
