Biography

As the top Dutch amateur time trialist, Jan Hugens was a natural choice for the 1960 Olympic team time trial, in which the Dutch team came fourth. He joined the professional circuit as an independent later in the season, turning a full pro in 1962. He won various minor races, but often lacked success in major races. His most notable wins were two stage victories in the 1962 Tour de l’Avenir. In 1966 he was in the breakaway group of the Amstel Gold Race, held in his native province of Limburg. About to sprint for the finish line, his chain derailed, and Hugens placed third. His best result in the GP des Nations, the unofficial world championships for time trialists, was 4th, in 1965. He was in the Tour de France selection several times, but never actually raced due to various injuries. After his racing career, Hugens worked in road construction and as a school janitor.
