Thomas Huschke was a track cyclist, whose grandfather Adolf, and father Gerhard, were also cyclists. Adolf won the German Professional Road Championship in 1921, while Gerhard finished fourth in the 1934 Professional World Championship. Thomas won the silver medal with the 4-man East German pursuit team at the 1972 München Olympics, and the bronze medal in the individual pursuit event at Montréal four years later. In the individual pursuit at München, Hushke finished ninth in the qualifying round, just missing out on a place in the quarter finals. In the team pursuit at Montréal, the East Germans lost to Great Britain in the race for the bronze medal.
Huschke won 16 East German national titles, one stage at the 1973 Peace Race, and the individual pursuit title at the 1975 World Championships. He later studied and graduated in economics, became marketing manager of the East German Gymnastics and Sports Federation, and then, in 1988, manager of figure skater Katarina Witt. From 2012-14 he was president of Berlin Cycling Union.
