Despite finishing third in both the NCU and BLRC (British League of Racing Cyclists) National Road Race Junior Championships as a 17-year-old in 1958, Harry Jackson became more of a time trial and track specialist. In 1960 and 1961 he won some good standard 25-time trials and in the second of those years was second to Barry Hoban in the National Pursuit Championship and also set the 1000 metres standing start record of 1:12.0.
Jackson was selected for the 1962 Perth British Empire and Commonwealth Games where he won a bronze medal in the individual pursuit. Also in 1962 he won his only national title when he became pursuit champion after beating Charlie McCoy. He came close to a second title in 1963 but was beaten by Hugh Porter.
Jackson had the honour of appearing in the 1964 and 1968 Olympics but the British squad failed to progress beyond the first round on each occasion and in 1968 were eliminated by the Italian quartet, who set a world record in the process. Jackson continued racing competitively until 1973.
