A plumber from the London borough of Putney, Ernest Johnson was a familiar figure at the Herne Hill velodrome during the thirties. He was part of the British quartet that won bronze medals in the team pursuit at both the Los Angeles and Berlin Summer Olympic Games. The performance of the British pursuiters in Berlin was unusual in that they lost all three races before the bronze medal race but progressed each time because of their finishing times were superior to other heat winners.
