Cyclist Graeme Jose came to the attention of the Australian team when he finished third at the national road race in 1971. Jose had made a lone break for victory with three laps to go before being caught, but he had done enough to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. At the Games in München he competed in both the road race and the team time trial, finishing 29th and 17th, respectively. At the start of 1973 he became the South Australian pursuit champion on the track before heading over to Europe to compete on the road. In May he rode in the Peace Race across Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Germany, eventually finishing 44th overall. One month later, however, Jose was tragically killed in a crash during the Tour of Austria. He was only 21-years-old.
